UN chief criticizes US for prioritizing power over international law
António Guterres said the US holds a “clear conviction” that multilateral approaches are secondary to its own influence. He added that what seems to matter most is “the exercise of the power and influence of the United States and sometimes in this respect by the norms of international law.”
His remarks follow recent US actions in Venezuela, including a military strike and the seizure of the nation’s president, as well as ongoing threats by President Donald Trump to annex Greenland. Guterres expressed concern that the founding principles of the UN, including the equality of its member states, are increasingly under threat.
Trump has openly criticized the UN, stating during a previous General Assembly that he had “ended seven unendable wars” alone while the organization “did not even try to help in any of them.” He later claimed, “I realised that the UN wasn't there for us.”
Guterres acknowledged the difficulties the UN faces in ensuring that all member states comply with international law. While the organization remains “extremely engaged” in resolving major global conflicts, he noted that “the big powers have stronger leverage” and questioned whether that leverage is used for durable solutions or just temporary fixes.
He emphasized that the UN requires reform to address the “dramatic problems and challenges” confronting its 193 member states, concluding, “There are those that believe the power of law should be replaced by the law of power.”
