Germany Deploys Eurofighters for Arctic Sentry Mission
Addressing reporters on the margins of a European Union defense ministers’ gathering in Brussels, Pistorius explained that NATO defense leaders are set to deliberate on the operation and individual national commitments during their discussions on Thursday.
"The German Armed Forces will participate with four Eurofighter jets and the corresponding air-to-air refueling capabilities in the first stage," he said. "What happens beyond that will be agreed upon among NATO partners tomorrow," he added.
Responding to questions about whether the deployment was essential or merely intended to ease tensions with the United States amid recent disputes concerning Denmark’s Arctic region of Greenland, Pistorius underscored Germany’s consistent dedication to safeguarding the Arctic.
"And I have always said, since I took office, that the Arctic and the High North plays an important role for the security of Europe and North America," he noted.
“Because the GIUK Gap between Greenland, Iceland, and the United Kingdom is of central importance for routes into and out of the North Atlantic, including for Russian submarines."
The Arctic Sentry drills were initiated on Wednesday by NATO’s Allied Command Operations to strengthen the alliance’s footprint in the Arctic and High North, as reported by the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE).
