Nordic Leaders Hold Talks with Rubio at Munich Security Conference

(MENAFN) Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen met Friday with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the Munich Security Conference in Germany.

According to statements from Copenhagen, the three officials convened on the sidelines of the annual security forum to discuss ongoing cooperation. Frederiksen later shared details of the discussion on the social media platform X, writing: “Constructive talk with Secretary of State Marco Rubio together with Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Chairman of Naalakkersuisut, at the Munich Security Conference. Work will continue as agreed in the high-level working group,”
The Munich meeting follows earlier discussions held in Washington on Jan. 14, where Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt met with US Vice President JD Vance and Rubio.

Those talks reportedly included US President Donald Trump’s expressed interest in Greenland, citing the island’s strategic Arctic position, abundant natural resources and growing concerns over Russian and Chinese activity in the region.

Both Denmark and Greenland have firmly dismissed suggestions of selling the territory, reiterating that Greenland remains under Danish sovereignty.

Observers have argued that efforts to pursue control of Greenland could strain unity within NATO, potentially benefiting Moscow and Beijing’s geopolitical ambitions. They also note that the United States already maintains defense arrangements that allow for a military presence on the island, making additional acquisition unnecessary for security purposes.
