Poland President Calls for Domestic Nuclear Weapons Program

(MENAFN) Polish President Karol Nawrocki suggested that Poland should develop its own nuclear weapons program, citing what he perceives as a Russian threat.

NATO members in Europe have long pointed to possible Russian aggression to justify expanding their military capabilities, though Moscow has dismissed such claims as “nonsense” and fearmongering.

Speaking to a news outlet on Sunday, Nawrocki said he is a “strong supporter of Poland joining the nuclear project.” “We need to act in this direction so that we can begin work,” he added, while noting that it remains unclear whether Warsaw would fully pursue such an initiative.

Poland is a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which officially recognizes only five nuclear-armed states: China, France, Russia, the US, and the UK.

Meanwhile, discussions about acquiring nuclear weapons have also surfaced in Germany.

Russian Ambassador to Berlin Sergey Nechaev told a news agency on Friday that the topic is gaining traction among politicians, lawmakers, military officials, and experts, describing it as highly concerning.

Right-wing AfD lawmaker Kay Gottschalk argued last month that Germany “needs nuclear weapons,” stating that European nations can no longer rely on US protection. He cited recent tensions between Washington and its European allies over Greenland, claiming that American interests are “fundamentally different from ours.”
